Sweet Baby Jesus and the Orphans

a london collective.
1968’s finest conception, the North London estate designed by Neave Brown in 1972 has got to be, by far, the most highly-held self contained communal estate, known to my existence. The board-marked unpainted concrete ingeniously transforms this mass of man-made material into a feeling of natural array. A shock absorbing design-work in the foundation of the highest tear, closest to the rail tracks, helps to subdue vibrations that would otherwise shudder their way through both rows of living.
The scene veering its way so beautifully into the horizon, is matched in height order from the railway, causing the obtrusive train remnants to stop dead in its tracks, as it were.
This estate that stands so proudly, would quite rightly always have had to fend for itself. Within Alexandra, the self sufficiency proves to not only house, feed, and school it’s lodgers, but cater great acsess, underground open parking, and a maze of concrete housed greenery. Truly a concrete jungle, if ever there were one.
In an industrial era such as the 70’s, Mr Brown succeeded in creating a stunning, eye-catching, warm environment, whilst still holding onto the zeighgeist.
I will never tire of walking through this hidden world. I will never grow old of its beauty. I will never fall in love with a structure quite like this. Opposing the odds, creating such tranquility in this way was never going to be a likely case. What a clever man you were.
